TITANIC HERITAGE TRUST
| Titanic Historical Society is founded
The Titanic Historical Society, Inc. (THS) is the premier information source for all things Titanic and White Star Line related.
Formed in 1963, by Edward Kamuda. As a young boy Titanic’s story captured his imagination and made a lasting impression.
The more he learned, the more he became aware of the individual acts of bravery from survivors and those who lost their lives. He also realized that their precious history would be lost - - forever - - if someone didn't act immediately.
The THS was the first and is the largest global organization dedicated to preserving the history of RMS Titanic and the White Star Line.
They invite all to visit the Titanic Museum, a unique collection of personal items donated by survivors and their families, historical documents and memorabilia from Titanic, Olympic, Britannic and White Star Line ships.
(2003) Although the Ulster Titanic Society had been attracting members from all over the world for a number of years, an overwhelming 91% Yes vote in favour of a name change resulted in the Belfast Titanic Society being born.
The society is proud to have as its President, John Parkinson who as a young boy with his father watched RMS Titanic depart from Belfast bound for Southampton in 1912. Born in 1907, John joined Harland & Wolff at the age of fifteen as a office boy messenger.
He began his apprenticeship with H&W when he turned sixteen in the big joinery shop, completing his time in 1928 and then started earning the grand sum of £3 for a 47 hour week. “You seldom got the 3 pound notes into your hand” he recalls, there were deductions for National Insurance even in those days, one shilling & sixpence, 7½ p in today’s Money. “ I remember feeling rich some weeks, when due to overtime, I got the 3 pound notes plus some silver and copper coins as well!! You didn’t even get cash in a packet - the coins were wrapped up in the notes and paid out through the tiny window in the the Timekeeper’s office, on production of your board”.
