Walter Lord’s book “A Night to Remember” is published

The title has become a synonymous with the 1912 tragedy. The book became a classic, A Night to Remember inspired countless to read about the ship forming a greater appreciation for history.

Walter Lord tracked down survivors, searched files and archives to produce a moment by moment, "you are there" account presenting an existential situation with all its drama, suspense and terror.

As his taut narrative unfolded, the reader as drawn by the combination of contrasting bits of fact and emotion conveying a very real impression into the lives of the passengers on a glamorous new ship that meets disaster.

Inside one's imagination¬¬ onboard, literally traveling on that four day passage¬¬ from the anticipated embarkation at Southampton, Cherbourg or Queenstown to a fate that awaited in the cold stillness on the icy North Atlantic.

Walter Lord’s book spurned a generation of Titanic enthusiasts and inspired others to write many books on the subject but “A Night to Remember” still remains one of the most respected and factual books works ever written about that fateful night.

Walter Lord lost his fight against Parkinson’s Disease and passed away on Sunday 19th May 2002. Subsequently his will revealed that he had left his collection of film related material and personal items previously owned by Titanic survivors, to the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Which included ~ film scripts and stills from A Night to Remember. Items given to him by Titanic survivors included original photographs of Survivors approaching Carpathia, menus and telegrams sent by survivors. Also in the collection are items previously owned by William MacQuitty, producer of A Night to Remember.
