| Cunard takes over the remains of Cunard-White Star Ltd.
The Cunard Steam Ship Co. Acquired all the shares of Cunard-White Star Ltd. And the name of White Star Line was dropped in 1949 when Cunard finally took over the remaining interests of Cunard-White Star Line.
Until the end of 1960, a reminder of the line continued to sail from Liverpool.
The Britannic retained her White Star Line colours until the end, when she was scrapped at Inverkeithing.
The only White Star vessel still afloat today is the tender Nomadic. She was completed at Belfast in 1911 and served at Cherbourg. Sold in 1927, she continued to be used as a tender at Cherbourg and was later used for towing duties under the name Ingenieur Minard. Requisitioned during the Second World War, she was used to evacuate British troops from Le Havre and Cherbourg arriving in Portsmouth during the summer of 1940 when she was incorporated into the Royal Navy.
In 1968, she was sold for breaking up but was the resold and converted into a floating restaurant for use on the river Seine at Paris. Because of her rich history and involvement in the White Star saga.
The Nomadic needs to be preserved for future generations and is currently moored at the Quai de Sein at ale Havre and is seeking a sympathetic buyer to restore her to her former glory.
After several attempts by various organizations to acquire the Nomadic from her current owner. A new campaign has been launched in 2005.
Nomadic ~ ‘Bring Me Home’
We look forward to hearing that Nomadic is back home in Belfast where she belongs. |
