The White Star Line and Cunard work together

The first sign of the White Star Line and Cunard Line working together came with the announcement that the two lines had agreed that there would only be one sailing each week instead of two on the Southampton-New York service during the winter.

The ‘Big Four’ began calls at Boston on their way to New York and this led to the ending of the Liverpool-Boston-Philadelphia service which had only been taken over from IMM’s American Line in 1921.

In the same year, the Dominion Line fleet had been transferred to Leyland Line ownership and with the eventual disappearance of the Dominion name, the White Star - Dominion Joint Service was renamed the White Star Line (Canadian Services) in 1925.

On January 1, 1927, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co., of London, acquired the Oceanic Steam Navigation Co. And so ownership of the White Star Line passed back into British hands.

The Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. was part of Lord Kylsant’s shipowing group, and Lord Kylsant was also chairman of Harland & Wolff.

One immediate result was the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. ending their four-ship Southampton-New York service which had been started in 1921.
