The White Star Line Rebuilds. The New Homeric
Of 34,351grt, the new Homeric was 774.3ft. (235m.) long with a beam of 83.3ft. (25.39m.) accommodating 529 First class, 487 Second class and 1,750 Third class passengers.
She sailed from Southampton on February 15, 1922, on her maiden voyage to New York, via Cherbourg.
The second ship had been launched on June 20, 1914, by Blohm & Voss, Hamberg, as the Bismarck of Hamburg Amerika Line.
In 1919, she was handed over to Britain as part of war reparations.
The White Star Line and Cunard S.S. Co. Jointly bought the Bismarck and Imperator, the Bismarck became the Majestic of the White Star Line and the Imperator became the Berengaria of Cunard.
This joint arrangement lasted for ten years when the respective ships were acquired by each company.
Of 56,551grt, the majestic was the largest steamer in the world and the largest and fastest ship ever in the White Star Line fleet.
She was 955.8ft. (291.31m.) in length, overall, with a beam of 100ft. (30.51m.) and had accommodation for 700 First class, 545 Second class and 850 Third class passengers.
The Majestic sailed from Southampton on May 10, 1922, on her maiden voyage to New York.
The Southampton-New York service was now operated by Majestic, Olympic and Homeric. |
