| J.P. Morgan acquires The White Star Line
The White Star Line and its managers Imay, Imrie & Co. were taken over by J.P.Morgan’s conglomerate, IMM “The International Mercantile Marine Co’ left to Bruce Ismay by his father, he became president and managing director of IMM. He then played a major part in the events that followed.
MM acquired other British companies, and over the following years, these purchases resulted in the movement of ships between companies.
The White Star Line took over the Liverpool-Boston and Boston-Mediterranean services of the Dominion Line, and the four largest Dominion steamers were given names ending in the White Star Line’s traditional ‘ic’.
To ensure that only the one IMM line ran on the prestigious Liverpool-New York route, the Leyland Line were forced to withdraw their recently-started Liverpool-New York service in favour of White Star Line.
