The White Star Line In the Beginning|The White Star Line’s distinctive house flag, the red swallow-tailed burgee with the five pointed white star became as famous as the the shipping line itself in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first centuries. And still today is synonymous with R.M.S Titanic and the White Star Line. |Although founded in 1869, the White Star Line’s history can be traced back a further 20 years. In 1849, the Liverpool shipbrokers of Pilkington & Wilson, founded by John Pilkington and Henry Threlfall Wilson, ventured into ship owning and purchased the Iowa, of 879tons. What is believed to be the first recorded instance of the White Star Line name being used on the North Atlantic was later that year when sailings by the shipbrokers ’White Star Line of Boston. Packets were operated from Liverpool.
Several other ships were acquired for the trade with North America but their main business was with sailing packets to Australia. | |
